This class will bring us to the island of Cuba to look at the art of Alexandre Arrechea. Arrechea is a Cuban visual artist. His work
involves “concepts of power and its network of hierarchies, surveillance, control, prohibitions, and subjection.” He does a great
deal of imagery with Afro-Cuban masks. Students in this class will look at and compare the similarities and differences between these two art
forms and then explore making their own masks using card stock and found materials.
