A colonel in the American Revolutionary War and often called the “Father of the American Railroad,” Col. John Stevens (1749–1838) lived through one of the most pivotal eras in U.S. history. He foresaw that the young nation’s future strength depended on its industrial and technological advancement—essential to ensuring America’s global competitiveness and economic success.
Join library staff from the Samuel C. Williams Library at Stevens Institute of Technology as they explore Stevens’ remarkable legacy and his foundational contributions to early American history and the development of Hoboken. This presentation will feature original archival documents and artifacts from the Archives & Special Collections that bring his story—and this transformative era—to life.

Access Update 1/7/2026: Guests should enter campus through the 9th Street gate where a Stevens Campus Police officer will meet them and escort them to the Samuel C. Williams Library. At the conclusion of the event all guests must leave campus through the 9th Street gate. The Library will only be open between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
