2026 is the 250th anniversary year of the United States and this has inspired Liz to adopt
a new them for this month which will be: “Artists Who Influenced Early America”.

For the first artist, students will look at the work of Jennie Augusta Brownscombe.
Brownscombe was one of the founding members of the Art Students League in New York and
her work was widely popular because of her naturalistic style. She painted scenes from
Colonial history to help her viewers escape from the increasing depressive life of encroaching
industrialization and 1800s urbanization. Although her works evoked nostalgic feelings she
researched her depictions from first person accounts, including, what may have been her most
popular piece, Thanksgiving at Plymouth. Students will also look at people in Colonial dress
and copy and recreate figures in the clothing worn 250 years ago in the very young U.S.A. This
will be a wonderful way to practice and improve their life drawing skills.

All are welcome!

This program will be held both in person and live on Zoom and YouTube.

Registration is required whether you are attending in person or online. Registration closes 15 minutes before each class. You will receive the Zoom link and password 15 minutes before the class begins.

If you have any questions or have problems logging on, please email laura.knittel@hobokenlibrary.org.
